Hong Jing Luo

Fans of Golden Yunnan will love our similarly rich, sweet Hong Jing Luo black tea (also known as Golden Bi Lou). The name Hong Jing Luo roughly translates to “golden, downy feathers;” it was chosen because the tea’s golden leaves and buds are loosely rolled into small coils that are shaped like tiny, delicate feathers. Its aroma, flavor and aftertaste are all incredibly rich and sweet – anticipate notes of raisins, sweet potato, cocoa, brown sugar, malt, roasted pumpkin, dry wood, tobacco and dark brandy. A balancing astringency makes this black tea ideal for pairing with breakfast foods, pumpkin pie or chocolate. Start your day with a cup of Hong Jing Luo, with or without milk, brown sugar and a chocolate croissant.

Tea to Water Ratio 1:1. If you prefer a stronger flavor, use up to two grams of tea for each cup of water.

Water: Filtered water is best. Use water at 212ºF (fully boiling)

Traditional Steeping: 3 to 5 minutes

Flash Steeping: First, we run warm water over the tealeaves and pour it off very quickly. This removes any impurities and “awakens” the tealeaves for brewing. Then, we steep the tea – 35 to 60 seconds.

Lighter Color, Sweet Taste

These small, fluffy looking tea leaves brew a lighter colored tea than most black teas, but that doesn't mean it is less flavorful! The description is spot on here, almost a sister tea to Golden Yunnan, but the sweetness is a bit more subtle. The cocoa, malt, and sweet potato notes are especially noticeable. As suggested I brewed this this morning and had it with breakfast. A fantastic compliment to your morning. Will switch off my morning tea between this and Red Dragon Pearl from now on.

Sweet Potatoes

It was Amber color after steep. Smelled a bit of malt. Reminded me of yams. It is very smooth. Not at all bitter and no astringency. After it cooled down a bit, the sweetness really seemed to come out.
